A Very Warm Welcome to Open Studios 2020!
Hello, I'm Sue Smith and although I opted for the online version of Open Studios this year, I am more than happy for you to come along to visit my art studio in Jackmoor, Exeter, to view my work and have a chat. My only request is that you contact me in advance, mainly to avoid too many people in the studio at any one time. Apart from the safety aspect during these difficult times, it also means that I can devote more time to you individually to answer any questions that you might have. I like to take that rare opportunity of good weather days as well, to work on outdoor projects, so I'm not always based at the studio.
You can contact me via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call/message me on 07759 988236 to arrange your visit.
Due to the COVID-19 situation and lockdown I have focused on free online tutorials this year, which you can follow step by step, in order to create your own flower garden glass mosaics. These will be permanently available for you to view on my YouTube channel Sue Smith Glass Mosaics, along with other free tutorials, hints and tips.
Normally, I run monthly workshops to teach my glass on glass/mirror technique, which I have developed over the past 19 years. Hopefully I will be able to start these up again on a smaller scale in the near future. I even hope to run some Christmas Workshops over the coming months, where you could learn to make personalised gifts for others or create that special something for your own home. Vouchers are also available as gifts for my workshops and my shop.
Mosaic Connections is a very supportive Facebook Group that we created and promoted during lockdown, and is for anyone who is interested in the world of mosaic - from beginners to professionals. The group is designed to introduce and support those new to the craft with helpful advice, tips and tricks shared by the more experienced mosaic artists. It is a very positive and friendly group connecting many nationalities on all levels.
Help with Resources.
Many have expressed difficulty in sourcing tools and materials, especially during Covid-19 times, and requested recommendations, help and advice. Buying the wrong equipment can be a costly mistake and very disheartening, especially when you're just starting up. It also seemed impossible to acquire a great range of colours & textures in stained glass without spending a fortune and taking up a lot of valuable space. Taking this into consideration, we set up an e-commerce shop on my website to supply students and other artists around the world with the ideal tools and a fabulous selection of Glass Hobby Boxes, Mosaic Kits and F.A.B.S. (fun accessories and bugs!). This way you can still have the variety, but by being able to buy in small quantities, it is also very affordable. I use all the tools and materials myself so they are well tried and tested - you don't need to buy top of the range or large quantities - here's a little taster.......
As I have been so busy setting up my shop and mostly work on commissions and orders, it means I never carry a large quantity of mosaics in stock at any one time. Maybe you would like to come along to a future workshop and learn to create this beautiful work for yourself. It really is a very therapeutic hobby, creating something amazing with scraps of glass and working with vibrant colours. Plus it opens up a whole new social circle where you can meet many new people.
I do hope you join me during Open Studios and please take a look at my 'About' page and my Gallery.
Thank you for your support, Sue
